Chemical Peels (Medium to Deep)
Controlled chemical denaturization of dermal proteins.
Mechanism of Action
Chemical peels induce a controlled wound to the skin. By lowering the pH drastically, the acid denatures (destroys) the proteins in the epidermis and dermis. The depth of this destruction is dictated by the type of acid, the concentration, and the number of layers applied.
Superficial Peels
Glycolic, Salicylic, Mandelic
Destroys only the stratum corneum and parts of the epidermis. Used for acne control and mild pigment. Zero downtime.
Medium Peels
TCA (15-35%), Jessner's Solution
Penetrates through the epidermis into the papillary dermis. Causes frosting (protein coagulation) and significant peeling (5-7 days). Highly effective for melasma and mild actinic damage.
Deep Peels
Phenol, Baker-Gordon Formula
Reaches the deep reticular dermis. Requires cardiac monitoring due to phenol toxicity risk. Unrivaled for severe perioral rhytids, but carries a 2-week raw downtime and risk of permanent hypopigmentation.
TCA CROSS (Chemical Reconstruction of Skin Scars)
A specialized application technique where high-concentration TCA (70% - 100%) is placed focally into the base of deep ice pick or narrow boxcar scars using a wooden applicator. This causes localized necrosis of the scar wall, provoking a robust collagen response that elevates the floor of the scar over 4-6 sessions.
